The issue with Japanese fonts will be handled as part of ALF-2453.

Installing OO 3.2 has fixed the problem.

          http://download.services.openoffice.org/files/stable/3.2.0/OOo_3.2.0_LinuxIntel_install_en-US.tar.gz

My bad, OStorageHelper.getStorageFromInputStream is c++ within OOo.

If there's no workaround, it probably should be documented that open office 3.2 is required for conversion of office 2007+ documents?

I'm resolving this as 'Not a bug'.

It seems this is an OpenOffice issue and I don't see a workaround in Alfresco. Yes, it should be documented that OOo 3.2+ is required for the successful transformation of Office 07 content.
          See http://wiki.alfresco.com/wiki/Setting_up_OpenOffice_for_Alfresco#Installing_OpenOffice

Thanks for your help everyone. I understand that there is an issue in the handling of Japanese fonts and that will be addressed under another task.
