 Description

[Description]:
In the latest Cloud release deployed on the weekend 26.+27/07 the 'Share Link' feature has been removed from the document actions pane for a document. This is affecting the web browsers IE 8/9, which are just compatible to the old flash previewer and don't feature the HTML preview (new PDF previewer) which has the 'Link to document' feature included.

[Steps to reproduce]:
1.) Log in to Alfresco Cloud with either IE 8 or IE 9, don't use the computability mode.
2.) Browse to document's details view
3.) At preview window the paper clip icon - 'Share Link' feature is missing. See screenshot attached.

[Expected Behaviour]:
'Share Link' or recently called 'Link to document' feature should be available across the supported browsers in Alfresco Cloud.

[Observed Behaviour]:
The 'Link to document' feature is just available on Firefox, Chrome, Safari and IE 10+ which support the HTML5 preview.

[Analysis to date]:
1.) Cloud release 37 notes:
Improvements include:

  • Removal of the 'Share' option from the document actions panel. Users now have to use the quick share link.

2.) Tested on IE 8 & IE 9 feature is missing on any other browser it works

3.) The reasons for the this change are:
a.) The product is heading towards the use of HTML5 preview functionality for on-premise Enterprise and Cloud, as the use of the flash player plug-in for preview has been always a source of security concerns and didn't serve in terms of reliability and performance to our full satisfaction.
b.) This feature was causing significant confusion when trying to share files with external users - cutting and pasting the link would not allow non-site members access.

4.) The workarounds for the time being are:
a.) To use the 'Quick Share' link which will allow access for internal and external users as this shares the document publically.
As I understand from previous updates in this ticket, that's not in line with your use-case and doesn't server your requirements.
b.) The URL generated by 'Share Link' action is the same as the one displayed in the URL bar of the browser if you view a document in the details view, i.e. copying the URL from the browser's URL bar and past it for share somewhere else or send it via email to a co-worker servers the same purpose for internal links only. The only drawback, you won't be able to link to a particular page in the document.

This is nothing to do with the PDF viewer:

"the 'Share Link' feature has been removed from the document actions pane for a document. This is affecting the web browsers IE 8/9"

The point here is that PM decided to deliberately remove the 'Share Link' feature from the UI for the Cloud in this build because it "caused confusion". You'll need to ask WAT2 team about the why/how.
